I slowly turned toward her.
She was crying.
“Chloe?”
She didn’t answer.
“What happened?”
She wiped her eyes.
“I wasn’t going to tell you.”
“Tell me now.”
She looked at Brad.
Then at me.
“The night of the accident…”
Her voice broke.
“I was in the car.”
Brad stepped backward.
“No.”
“SÌ.”
“Mi avevi detto che non eri lì.”
“Ho mentito.”
Ho sentito il petto stringersi.
“Perché?”
Chloe mi guardò.
“Perché c’eri anche tu.”
La stanza tacque.
Scossi la testa.
“NO.”
“Eri seduto sul sedile posteriore.”
“Non ricordo.”
“Eri incosciente.”
Brad sussurrò: “È impossibile.”
Chloe lo guardò.
“Non guidavi da solo, Brad.”
Li fissai entrambi.
“Cosa è successo?”
Chloe prese fiato.
“So cosa stai pensando.”
“Mio padre è morto da otto anni.”
“Lo so.”
“Brad?”
Alla fine mi guardò.
“Pensavo che tuo padre ci stesse seguendo.”
“Perché?”
“Perché ho visto la sua macchina.”
Il mio cuore batteva forte.
“La macchina di mio padre?”
“La vecchia berlina verde.”
Me ne sono ricordato subito.
“L’ho fatto.”
La stanza tacque.
Si sedette sul bordo del letto.
“Si chiamava Daniel.”
Non avevo mai sentito quel nome.
“Perché non me l’hai mai detto?”
“No,” sussurrò. “È scomparso.”
Ho guardato tra loro.
“Ed è tornato?”
“Sei mesi fa.”
Tutto improvvisamente connesso.
L’incidente.
Il telefono segreto.
La clinica.
Le fotografie.
The messages.
The fear.
Someone had been watching us.
But why?
Chloe finally told me the truth.
Daniel had discovered that their father had secretly maintained a second family. When Brad’s father died, Daniel returned looking for documents proving he had been cheated out of an inheritance.
Brad had found the documents first.
Daniel wanted them.
The night of the accident, Daniel followed Brad’s car.
I had been there because Brad had finally decided to tell me everything.
But before he could, another car forced us off the road.
I had hit my head.
Brad had suffered a serious concussion.
Chloe had been in the car because Brad had asked her to bring the documents.
E poi Daniel scomparve.
Ma non era scomparso per sempre.
Stava guardando.
In attesa.
Ho guardato Brad.
“Quindi non avevi intenzione di lasciarmi?”
Scosse la testa.
“NO.”
“Non incontravi Chloe perché la amavi?”
“NO.”
Ho guardato Chloe.
Abbassò gli occhi.
“Lo stavo aiutando.”
“Per quanto tempo?”
“Troppo lungo.”
Seguì un doloroso silenzio.
Non riuscivo ancora a dimenticare il profumo.
Le bugie.
Le notti tarde.
I messaggi.
“Mi hai mentito,” l’ho detto a Brad.
“Lo so.”
“Mi hai fatto sentire pazzo.”
“Lo so.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“I was terrified.”
“So was I.”
He nodded.
“I should have trusted you.”
“Yes.”
“I should have told you everything.”
“Yes.”
“I am so sorry.”
For the first time in months, I saw my husband without the excuses.
